If anyone ever asks me how I met my wife, Rachel, I will tell him/her that I met her in McKenzie, British Columbia and she met at New York City. Most people will give me a miserable face after hearing that and might think in their head, “Is this guy making sense?” However, if I told the same thing to younger people, they will say ‘wow, you guys met on internet’, after that they will still give me a miserable face and might think, “Cyber relationship? Serious ar?”

Well, I didn’t really think whether it’s gonna work out or not initially, I just let the relationship flow naturally. We had met each other online for about more than a year and that kind of relationship gradually came to a stage where it means more than just friendship.

As a man, I have to confess with my feeling to Rachel first and so I told her, “Can you be my gf?” through ICQ. I thought she can take it easily because she always gave me an impression that she was a big time playgirl. You know, she got reddish hair, loved miniskirts & high heel shoes, worked at cybercafé, and studied at Sunway college some more, what a great combination for a playgirl (please don’t find it offensive, it’s merely my perception at that time). She probably has heard many other guys saying that to her so many times, I supposed. In fact, I shocked her with “Can you be my gf”. Later to find out, this lady is a decent girl who just loves fashion and make-up. Drinking, smoking and loud music are definitely not her type. Eventually, I hit the jackpot with an extra bonus and we started our risky long distance gf-bf relationship, just like getting online without firewall, anyone can get hacked in anytime.

Oh, I’ve forgotten to tell you a bit of my history. Previously, I had two former relationships before Rachel. I failed the last two relationships and both did not end up pretty. However, I did not hold myself back to give my 100% feeling to a new relationship to come. A friend once said, “Each and everyone has a soul mate, and you are apart with your soul mate once you are born. Therefore, your life mission is to find your lost soul mate back.” Therefore, if one relationship did not work out for me, I did not cling on to it or blame anyone, because I truly believe that the relationship with true soul mate shall be perfect, and I shall not let my soul mate wait too long. So, I never give up hope and faith. Like what Edison Graham Bell said, “The moment you are about to give up, you have never known how close you are to success.” I guess this will apply to relationship too. So, my mission is to find my soul mate, I moved on.

Well, things happened for a reason. I was born in Penang and moved to KL since 2 years old. Rachel was born in Perak and never moved out of Perak. Later I was sent to Canada in 1993 and decided not to come back to Malaysia. Rachel only moved to KL for college study in year 2000. Geographically it did not favor us at all. Thanks to the invention of ICQ, among so many users, something worked magically and pulled both of us together one day. From then on, the exciting journey begins. I think precession takes effect on us and put us together at the fastest and most harmonious way.

After my graduation, I was planning to take a tour to the Europe. However, it’s so happened that Rachel did her twin program at WMU, West Michigan which is only 5 hours flight from Vancouver. Instead of going to the Europe, I changed my coordinate towards Michigan and met my cyber girlfriend for the very first time.

That night, when I arrived to Michigan, I took a cab to her apartment almost close to midnight due to flight delay. I rang on the doorbell and knocked on the door, but no one answered. First thought that came to my mind, “If I come all the way to Michigan, spent all my Europe trip money, and there’s no such person named Rachel all these while, I would be the most foolish sucker in the century.” Almost half an hour later, the neighbor next door opened the door and asked me with a Malaysian accent, “Who are you looking for?”. “I’m looking for Rachel Low,” I said. “Oh, Rachel Low, I guess she is out or something”, the neighbor answered. Phew, at least I had ensured that Rachel actually stayed there and that just released me from being less foolish. The neighbor was kind enough to invite me over while I was waiting for Rachel. About another half an hour later, a young lady opened the door, and looked in with half of her body hidden at the door way. In that nanosecond of a quick glance of her figure with my sharp eyes (che), I can almost 101% sure that she was Rachel. My heart started to pound like crazy as if it was tumbling inside a full speed washing machine. I knew I have to keep my cool, you know, first impression is everything. I sat on my upright luggage steadily with my legs crossed, bend my body over gently and peeped at her with a heart killing smile. “Hi Rachel”, I waived my hand at her. I knew that she was having an 8-degree heart attack from her reaction at that moment (che). I stood up, and took my luggage and she showed me the way to her apartment.

Rachel was sharing the apartment with another schoolmate from Malaysia, and there’s no extra room. That means I get to stay in her room–“Yes!!” screamed in my head. Since her room was so small, and there’s no extra mattress for me which means I get to share her single sized bed together, “Yes!!” I yelled even louder with tears in my head.

What could possibly happen for two strangers yet so-called couple sharing a single sized bed together for the next 3 weeks? I leave it to your imagination. Well, I am a decent gentleman and we simply had a great time that night (you may stop your imagination here). Yet seeing Rachel physically right in front of me was a funny feeling, so close yet so strange, so surreal yet so real, in fact, it was real.

Every day I accompanied her to her classes, did the assignments together, shopped for grocery together, cooked meals together, did laundry together, anything that we can possibly do together, we did it like the Siamese twins.

One night, we were at the room chit-chatting, I said one thing that a man can be most gutsy to say, “Will you marry me?” Initially, I thought it was the gravity of the moon that confused me. How a man with no financial basis (just graduated), and worst didn’t even believe in marriage could possibly say that sinful words to an innocent lady? Am I out of my mind? Guess what, I was out of my mind thrice during that 3 week stay with Rachel, I knew I meant it. My heart felt it, I have found my soul mate.
